La Verkin is a city located in Washington County, Utah. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,392.

Geography

La Verkin is located at 37°12'49" North, 113°16'0" West (37.213615, -113.266802)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 41.8 km² (16.1 mi²). 41.8 km² (16.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there are 3,392 people, 1,053 households, and 840 families residing in the city. The population density is 81.2/km² (210.3/mi²). There are 1,158 housing units at an average density of 27.7/km² (71.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.81% White, 0.12% African American, 1.27% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 1.92% from other races, and 2.56% from two or more races. 4.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,053 households out of which 44.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.3% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.2% are non-families. 17.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.20 and the average family size is 3.61.

In the city the population is spread out with 35.8% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,949, and the median income for a family is $39,432. Males have a median income of $30,051 versus $19,602 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,113. 12.1% of the population and 10.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.7% of those under the age of 18 and 6.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
